Hi folks! Welcome to the new official online home of Mrs. Ahearn's library. If you're interested in what we've done in the library in the past, check out the blog for all the NAPS Elementary librarians here.
This year, it has been wonderful working steadily in both the Sargent and Thomson elementary schools. With a new core curriculum in place for our library lessons, developed with the other library media specialists last year, we've been doing a ton of learning in the library!

In September, all the grades had a introductory lesson to the library, along with some guidelines, rules, and expectations. The biggest change was the emphasis that the library is a classroom and all the rules of a classroom apply in the library.
October was a month full of learning around finding information. Our youngest learners learned about the difference between fiction and nonfiction, and became experts! Second graders learned about the way our libraries are organized - the nonfiction by the Dewey Decimal System, and the fiction by ABC order. Third, fourth, and fifth graders spent the month talking about information seeking - where to go to find information, and what to do about it when you find it!
November began with a discussion of computers. All grades worked on becoming familiar with their login information, as well as digital resources like Google Classroom and Keyboarding Without Tears.

December is the most exciting month of the year, because it's the month of the Hour of Code! Each grade is testing our their coding skills playing drag-and-drop coding games. This might seem like all fun-and-games, but it's actually a skill that freshmen in college use in order to learn how to code computers! Our hope is that by giving students an hour of coding experience in school will ignite a passion for computer science that will lead to future success!
That's all for now!
