September Library Lessons

Hello all you Sargent and Thomson library fans! Wow, what a month we've had getting the libraries up and running! Here's what we've been up to this month...

First Grade

With our first graders, we've been talking about the parts of the books in our library, so we can better understand how to care for our library space.

We also have been enjoying Nanette's Baguette by Mo Willems - it's a pretty funny story, with lots of rhyming words!

Second Grade

Second graders had a rather challenging week - they had to use what they learned last year about fiction and nonfiction to sort piles of books from our library into piles of fiction, and piles of nonfiction! A few of our second graders remembered that numbers in the call number = a book that's nonfiction, so they had a pretty easy time of it!

Third Grade

Our third graders played a version of a very popular game this week in the library! I Have/Who Has is a game that requires really good listening, and helps us discovered the definition of words that might be tricky. We played our library version, which included tricky vocabulary like copyright date (the year a book was made) and historical fiction (a book that is made up, and takes place during a real, historical time period).

Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade

After speaking with fourth and fifth grade teachers, it became apparent that a quick lesson on genres was in order for our fourth and fifth graders. In order to spice things up a bit, I create a Genre Kahoot! - an online game that students played (either in groups or individually) to test their knowledge of different genres by reading passages from books.

Most classes did fairly well, but we'll be reviewing more of that information later on in the year, just to be sure.
